How to Create a Solo Retreat in Your Home

Considering we are all homebound and in need of a “spring cleaning” mentality, I’ve been revisiting the Marie Kondo methods and discovered my new favorite: the “power spot.” She defines it as “a place in your home that is just for you, your own personal space filled only with things you love.”

Especially when we’re stuck, why don’t we take the time to create mini, meditative daily destinations? Marie Kondo suggests, and I accept.

Where will you create or enhance yours? My office corner, until recently, admittedly served as a ground zero for papers or shopping bags. Now, thanks to Bella Vita, it has shifted into a space of tranquility and retreat. It’s where I write my thoughts or my next blog post, chat with friends over a virtual happy hour, or read through cookbooks for new recipe inspiration.

Follow our ideas to step up and then settle right into your solo retreat.

HAND CREME

Because we’re washing or sanitizing our hands every five minutes, we need to offset the dryness with a buttery, beautiful-smelling hand creme. I lean on Tocca every time.

BRIGHT BLOOMS

Bella Vita carries an artificial flower line that looks like perfection — no watering or sunlight required. Ranunculus is my favorite bloom and is difficult to source most months of the year, but it reminds me of my wedding bouquet and thus gives me alllll the feels. The stems fit snugly in the Simon Pearce bud vase.

A GLASS OF WINE

A pour of white, red or sparkling before dinner signals the separation between my work day and leisurely night ahead. Particularly during this period of working from home, I rely on these signals to instill a sense of normalcy and routine! I’m drawn to the Simon Pearce Vintner White Wine glass shape — contemporary and classic.

A NICE READ

As we are all inundated by “breaking news” notifications and social media updates, I think we forget what it’s like to open and turn the pages of a sturdy, strong book. Both The Curated Home + Simple Matters prompt and inspire a minimalist and cerebral ambiance.

A SNAPSHOT

Personalize your spot with a photograph that, as Mari Kondo coins, brings you true “joy.” The subjects and settings of the images can spark a feeling of peace and security, even if indirect.

PILLOW TALK

Decorative pillows make all the difference. The various shapes and fabrics add texture, comfort and pops of color to a space. And while I am an all-neutral fan, incorporating navy is a new go-to.

A COZY THROW

To anchor the other side of my swivel chair, the Royal Pandan Euro Wicker Basket holds my Barefoot Dreams Bouclet throw, the yummiest, softest blanket for cozy reads. I’ll pile in a few other blankets for storage, too.

STRIKE A MATCH

The Illuminaria Boxed Candle Jar is so romantic, and its size translates such a dynamic glow and sense of warmth in the room. The scents are heavenly, too. Don’t skimp on the matches, either; this jar is an adorable accompaniment that prompts you to strike every time you get settled in your space.
