Happy (almost) Cinco de Mayo

CAMILLE_BRIDAL SHOWER-98 (1) Hope you all are in festive spirits! What are your plans for tomorrow's fiesta? I will be sipping one of these fancy margaritas from my Camille Styles round-up, and my guacamole intake will be much higher than average. I'm very much looking forward to an excuse to eat and drink some of my favorite things with the girls. How are you celebrating?!

A New Look

EDOC5647.jpg

Welcome to a new look. A fresh approach. A pure aesthetic. I have been dying to share my new redesign and (much easier to remember) URL with all of you. It's been in the works for months, and I am thrilled with the final product. I sought to create a site that metaphorically serves as your breath of fresh air in the morning -- clean lines, fluid formatting, and easy-to-follow facets.

I encourage you to explore, but here are a few little details I don't want you to miss...

  • RECIPES: If you click on the header, "Recipes," you will see a categorical and alphabetical index, as you saw in the last version. However, the new drop-down categories allow a more visual, focused experience for you to browse and choose.
  • SOCIAL MEDIA FEEDS: Look to your right, and you'll see my social media buttons to lead you to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. Follow me for foodie-filled details.
  • CONTACT: Directly email me rather than open your account elsewhere and reach out! ...Although you're more than welcome to share your thoughts at cara.greenstein@gmail.com.

So. . .what do you think?! I'd love your thoughts!

Be Intentional

A new month always seems to carry that invigorating realization of fresh opportunities and simultaneously frenzied scheduling. Frankly, I have been caught up in a mindset of nonstop commitments. School assignments and job-hunting are proving continuous, while blog growth and last minute traveling are fueling creative freedom. March, for me, will be the ultimate test for balance.
Sometimes, we need to take one step back to reevaluate and self-reflect on current perceptions and future expectations. With Caramelized, I have always attempted to make my form and content a priority in my daily routine. I constantly motivate myself (and am motivated by you) to keep stepping it up a notch, brainstorming innovative collaborations and providing a fresh frame of mind to seemingly monotonous habits. Of course, there are distractions in the mix, such as this past weekend’s Mardi Gras fest in New Orleans and an upcoming week-long trip to California and Mexico (with a Snap Kitchen juice cleanse in between!). But here I am to be intentional; to bring sweet touches and positive approaches to everyday experiences.
That’s right: you won’t find a scathing or snub restaurant review here. From the beginning, Caramelized has been about the sweet moments in life that fuel my readers, and me simultaneously. I write about what I love; so that’s what you’re going to get.

Let’s be intentional together. Thank you.
xo, Cara

Rejuvenated & Motivated

IMG_3227.jpg

Here I am, back in Austin after a 25-hour journey, across the world, from my new favorite place of Cambodia. I will be honest with you. While my father’s involvement in Harpswell, a college women’s dormitory and leadership center of the top 100 female students across Phnom Penh’s universities, had always impressed me, I was not expecting much more awe than from the brilliant girls whom I met.

But I was wrong (clearly). I left Cambodia feeling rejuvenated from its beauty and serenity, overwhelmed by a five-day whirlwind of jam-packed sightseeing, and motivated to do more.

Sali, head of Red Dirt Road

I spent one day in a village whose people’s smiles transcended any need for verbal communication. I witnessed the village’s newest initiative, entitled Red Dirt Road, an internal sewing business that prevents these sweet women from joining thousands of garment sweatshop workers (receiving only $80 per month). I listened to an inspiring panel of speakers—a Buddhist monk, Scottish-turned-Hong Kongan life coach, the President of UN Women in Cambodia, the Harpswell founder/leading MIT professor, and my father—who encouraged college women to be the change and leadership Cambodia needs as the country stiffly heals from its genocide only 35 years ago. I sang words of hope to the Harpswell women (with a jam session of Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift afterward, of course). I ate fantastic dishes prepared by chefs and waiters who were once street youth and now lead the culinary scene in Phnom Penh. I laughed and danced at a concert with author and female business leader Utara, whose involvement in Cambodia’s economic growth is distinctly admirable.

I don’t mean to distract from the primary purpose of my blog—you all know that I can’t wait to share my cooking class stories and restaurant favorites—but I hope this reflection arouses a desire to visit, or at the least, learn about a new culture beyond the food. Make it a New Years resolution. Form a connection and realize the similarities between those across the world and us. The impact is profound!

And please, please add Cambodia to your bucket list. I promise you won’t be sorry. Plus, you will be going with plenty of restaurant recommendations to get your itinerary started! You’re welcome.

A Ladies' Wine Party

IMG_2557.jpg

What better way to ring in the new year than with 18 of your high school girlfriends? From first grade through twelfth, I attended an all-girls school with approximately 50 of the same gals the whole way through. You would've thought we'd get sick of each other, but our little gathering last week proved the opposite! We sipped wine and munched, reminisced the good 'ole St. Mary's days, and shared stories of our post-college plans. I couldn't have been happier to host these ladies!

Below are a few highlights of my set-up for the evening. I have provided lists of must-have decor and food in order to turn your dining room or den into party central. Of course, I could not have pulled off all the little details without my event planning extraordinaire mother of Shindigs by Sheril!

Cheers to 2014 and hosting your own wine party in the near future...

THE DECOR
  • Burlap table runners
  • Assorted white flowers in vase varieties: hydrangeas, gerber daisies, sweetheart roses
  • Mason jar candle votives with burlap ribbon lining
  • Assorted white platters and serving pieces
  • Chalkboard food signage
  • Twine ribbon
  • Wine tags with a brown calligraphy pen
  • *Don't forget the wine openers if your guests are bringing the alcohol!
THE BITES:
  • Baked Brie with water crackers
  • Assorted sushi
  • Guacamole with chips
  • Roasted nuts
  • White chocolate-covered pretzels
THE SWEETS:
  • Assorted ice cream sandwiches: salted caramel, vanilla gelato, butter toffee, etc.
  • Pound cake with fresh berries
  • Fudge brownie bites
  • Peanut butter chocolate chip Rice Krispie bites

A Day in the Life of an Intern

applecardaman-cakes.jpg
Joining the Camille Styles team as editorial and event styling intern has been an unmatched creative outlet during my college experience.  Since beginning Caramelized almost one year ago (!), I have found a greater affection toward styling and photography in addition to food and writing—now I can put them to practice! With weekly photo shoots and events left and right, I have been introduced to the distinct fashion and arts culture that makes Austin such a trend magnet.
Here are a few highlights from the semester thus far…
My 10 best apple recipe finds for a fall kick-off, which were soon after featured on Martha Stewart Living!

A Splendid Grand Opening event at The Domain, where we shopped, tasted unbelievable bites and margaritas from La Condesa (watermelon and jalapeño bites, avocado and lump crab tostadas, and seabass hamachi) and mingled with the Camille Styles community.  My friends and I had a blast and will be shopping at Splendid very often now. Plus, it’s located right next to an Italian favorite, NoRTH.

My 10 best, most mouth-watering pumpkin bites to introduce October and appease my appetite. You’ll love these.
