Many of you answered my latest Instagram poll on Thanksgiving — I had asked if you were hosting or attending elsewhere (with a dish) this year, and 65% of responses were for “attending!” I am doing the same, though I’ll be an out-of-town guest, which inhibits my cooking abilities, unfortunately.
To help you make a final decision on your potluck side, however, I’ve rounded up some of my favorites from over the years that shouldn’t require too much maintenance once you arrive at your Thanksgiving feast. Of course, oven space is to be considered, and many of these dishes need to be kept under the warmer — but I hope the simplicity inspires you to bring something bold and beautiful for the table. November is National Bacon Month, arguably marking the most flavorful time of the year in our household.
I’m always an advocate of dishes that reflect the season or style of the gathering; and when it comes to autumn, squash hits a home run in this category.
I’ll admit I typically push aside casseroles on the Thanksgiving buffet; I have faint memories from childhood of too much mush and mystery ingredients (no offense to my relatives!), so I’d opt for recognizable veggies or potatoes instead. However, corn soufflé has always been the exception.
Individually portioned potatoes on Thanksgiving are a holiday miracle, y’all. No need to overthink the portion allocations among another casserole dish; simply count your number of Thanksgiving or Friendsgiving guests, hit up the mini sweet potatoes at Trader Joe’s, and count accordingly.
There's something quite beautiful about a "messy" presentation of fine ingredients. A perfectly round potato slice is always stunning, but a "smashed" effect is, to me, an approachable offering to summery spreads and outdoor dining.
Our one-year wedding anniversary was celebrated this past Sunday; and though we vowed to use our wedding china for a home-cooked dinner date to celebrate, I thought I'd surprise Alex with a less-expected dish for the antique dinnerware.
If you've never had smashed potatoes, you'll quickly see what you've been missing! A crisp exterior with an interior that melts in your mouth, this recipe adds irresistible flavors of garlic and parmesan. Plus, the presentation is gorgeous (and the red potato matches the Supper Club spread quite nicely!).
Aubergine is the color of the month (or at least, according to the Caramelized Supper Club), and I couldn't think of a more perfect side dish than a rich baked eggplant ratatouille.
The perfect finale to a family meal
