How to Host An Ice Cream Social

I scream, you scream…

This past spring, one year into a global pandemic with zero approved gatherings, we all wanted to scream a bit!

So one day in April, when warm weather was at last a constant and I found myself scrolling on Instagram past my bed time, I splurged on a Jeni’s Ice Creams six-pack delivery. The next morning, while in line at the coffee shop, I coincidentally ran into a friend who I’d argue is president of the unofficial Jeni’s Ice Creams Memphis fan club. We coordinated an outdoor ice cream social with a group of fully-vaccinated friends — and it might now be my all-time favorite impromptu theme for a backyard hangout!

Here’s how to host yours:

MAKE IT A POTLUCK

As party host, you’ll handle the ice cream flavors and serveware — but invite your friends to bring their favorite topping or two to contribute to a communal sundae bar! From farmers market produce to chocolate shavings, bright sprinkles to hot fudge, the options are endless. Be sure to reserve a set of bowls and spoons to display potluck toppings.(considering packaging might vary).

TRY SOMETHING NEW

Why limit toppings or flavor combos to what’s typically served in-store? Test out a crumbled batch of mini shortbread cookies, candied pecans you usually reserve for salads, or even balsamic reduction. I also enjoy tying in local bakeries or locally-sourced products in this case!

SCOOP WITH EASE

On your buffet, add a mason jar of hot water to hold 2-3 ice cream scoopers. This way, you don’t have to worry about cross-contamination of flavors, and you achieve the perfect scoop after dipping the scooper in warm water.

Here’s to making ice cream socials a mainstay!
