My anticipation for Spring always meets a climax—this year's hit on St. Patrick's Day when the sun shined and the temperatures reached 70s. I basked in the rays with Sawyer on our Downtown street's shared greenspace, taking in every ounce of Vitamin D. While most of my friends were drinking green beer with Jameson, I opted to spend my day switching out our closets, shopping for sandals, and experimenting with seasonal recipes.
This snazzy gin spritzer, whose vibrant color is boosted with blood orange juice, capped off our Saturday quite perfectly. Herbal, bubbly, refreshing and just the right amount of sweet, the cocktail embodies the refreshing entry of spring with every sip. Join me in cheers-ing to the new season!
1 ounce gin (I love Lula's Distillery from New Orleans)
1 blood orange
1 sprig fresh thyme
1 large ice cube, plus more ice for mixing
4 ounces tonic water
1/2 lime
1. Cut one slice of a blood orange and set aside for garnish. Squeeze orange juice in a small bowl. Add juice of half a lime.
2. In a cocktail shaker, pour gin and fresh thyme. Muddle until thyme is fragrant. Pour fruit juices into cocktail shaker, add ice and shake vigorously.
3. Pour cocktail over a large ice cube. Top with tonic water and orange slice. Serve immediately.
